Intertrigo - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition

Intertrigo is an inflammation of the top layers of skin due to moisture, bacteria, yeast, or fungus in the folds of the skin. It usually develops in the areas of the inner thighs and genitalia, the armpits, under the breasts, the underside of the belly, behind the ears, and the web spaces between the toes and fingers. It develops from mechanical factors and secondary infection. Heat and maceration are central to the process. Opposing skin surfaces rub against each other, causing erosions that become inflamed. Sweat, feces, urine, and vaginal discharge may aggravate intertrigo in both adults and infants. It is red and raw looking. It may itch, ooze or be a little sore. Intertrigo is particularly common in those who are overweight. Body folds (flexures) are prone to inflammatory rashes because of relatively high skin temperature.

Causes

  1. The body normally hosts a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. Some of these are useful to the body, some produce no harm or benefits, while others may cause harmful infections. This disease is caused by bacteria.
  2. The fungi thrive in warm, moist places on the body but attack the open areas of the body under normal conditions. The infections that are caused by these fungi are common among diabetics and those who are extremely overweight.
  3. If the skin is particularly moist, it may begin to break down. In severe cases, there may be a foul odor.

Symptoms

  1. In females symptoms of interigo are a white cheesy discharge that typically itches and irritates the vagina and surrounding outer tissues.
  2. Common sites include your inner thighs, in your armpits, underneath your breasts, in the folds of the skin on your abdomen, between your fingers and toes.
  3. Skin folds such as under the breasts or in the groin may be affected and may smell cheesy or yeasty.
  4. In interigo the problem such as backache, neck ache, shoulder discomfort, and even headache may occur. Patients complain of poor posture and ulnar nerve paresthesia.
  5. Maceration of the skin occurs when it is consistently wet.
  6. Occasionally, a secondary infection may develop, causing the formation of pustules and weeping and oozing of the skin, as well as severe itching and pain.

Treatment

  1. If you come in contact with a substance that may cause a rash, such as poison ivy, wash all exposed areas thoroughly with detergent and water.
  2. Hydrocortisone cream is useful in Intertrigo treatment. It can provide temporary relief of itching. Use sparingly on facial rashes and the genitals.
  3. Keep the skin folds as dry as possible. A drying solution such as Burow's compresses can be applied to the skin folds for 20 to 30 minutes several times a day to promote drying.
  4. The use of an oral anti-yeast medication such as Diflucan can be used. However, this does nothing to help treat the area. But it can relieve from itching for sometime.
