Mangosteen (Gab)

Botanically it is known as Diospyros peregrina. It is a beautiful, delicious fruit of tropical southeast Asia produced by a handsome tree that under favourable conditions can reach a height of 9.5 metres (31 ft). It has thick, dark, green glossy leaves; the flowers are large and polygamous. The fruits are about 3 inches in diameter, round to oblate in form and dark purple in colour. They have thick, hard rinds surrounding a large cavity in which is found snow­white flesh in segments resembling those of a mandarine orange. The mangosteen is juicy, delicate in texture and of delightful, slightly tart flavour.

Benefit and uses of mangosteen.

• A decoction of the bark is a household remedy for chronic dysentery, diarrhoea, menorrhagia and intermittent fever. A poultice of the bark is a applied to boils and abscesses. The fruit is also given in diarrhoea, dysentery and menorrhagia. In asthma, the dried rind of the fruit is smoked in doses of 45 grain.
• An extract of the fruit juice prepared by evaporating it on water bath to dryness is a very useful remedy for chronic diarrhoea and dysentery. An infusion of the bark is an effective gargle in sore throat, and mouth disorders.
• Mangosteen extract is useful in the treatment of arthritis, acid dyspepsia, fibromylagia, moderate asthma, otitis externa and eczema.
